Overview
As a contractor in the marine industry, I contributed to the redesign of a Monterey Express Cruiser. This project focused on creating a premium, performance-oriented express cruiser that combined luxurious overnight capabilities, spacious social areas, and strong handling for coastal and inland cruising. The design emphasized Monterey’s reputation for high-quality fit and finish, innovative features, and value in the express cruiser segment. It incorporates premium materials, modern styling, and thoughtful details to elevate the onboard experience while maintaining Monterey’s build quality standards. It targeted families and couples seeking a versatile boat for day boating, weekend getaways, and entertaining, with accommodations for 4–6 overnight, ample cockpit space, and powerful sterndrive or outboard options for responsive performance.
Contribution I played a key role in the redesign of the Monterey Express Cruiser. This included conducting extensive research into market trends, competitor offerings, user preferences, and ergonomic requirements to inform the overall direction of the refresh. I also led material selection for upholstery, finishes and hardware. This included creating detailed profile and plan view renderings to visualize the styling, layout, and integration of features—capturing the sleek dynamic lines, spacious deck arrangements, and premium aesthetic that define Monterey’s express cruiser. I developed the initial 3D model CAD dimensional studies and finalized scaled renderings to ensure accurate proportions, functionality, ergonomics and production feasibility throughout the project.
Outcome Although the Monterey Express Cruiser redesign ultimately did not advance to full production—due to a significant contraction in the express cruiser market segment during that period and the substantial investment required to bring a refreshed mid-size model to market—the initiative remains a powerful demonstration of strategic foresight and high-caliber marine design expertise. The work produced a thoroughly researched, visually compelling, and technically robust proposal that modernized the platform with premium materials, refined styling, optimized layouts, all while staying true to Monterey’s brand DNA of quality, value, and thoughtful innovation.
